Kualitas Kontrol Lab. Andrology

In order to make results from semen analysis useful for the clinical investigation of the man there are some basic demands on the quality that must be met.

Robust methods
Analyses should be simple and possible to repeat. This means that procedures for under the analysis should be as few as possible, easy to learn and repeat without changes. Furthermore, the procedures must contain steps that allow early discovery of random and systematic errors.

Duplicate assessments
Especially at the determination of concentration and motility it is important to do assessments in duplicate and to compare the two results since random error easily can influence the assessments. If the two counts do not agree, it is likely that at least one of the assessments is wrong, and two new assessments should be done.

Comparisons within the laboratory
To know that the results of the laboratory do not vary between the members of staff or between different points of time, it is essential that all individuals performing analytical work regularly participate in internal quality control (IQC).

Comparisons with the rest of the world
The aim with standardized method is that results from different laboratories should be possible to compare. This can facilitate for patients moving to another clinic. However, it is even more important for the clinic and laboratory: to be able to transfer results from published studies into their own clinical practice it is a basic requirement that the procedures used (methods, equipment, staff training) in the laboratory are equivalent to those employed as in the centre publishing a scientific report.
